Dr. Prativa Pandey, Medical Director of CIWEC Travel Medicine Center Kathmandu, made a commitment to support Bayalpata Hospital after she visited the region and learned about the needs firsthand. Instead of donating what she thought we needed, she asked us to prepare a list of items of highest need. We held a hospital-wide meeting and decided on a list that included everything from bed pans to a delivery table. Dr. Pandey reviewed the list, agreed and had the items procured and transported right to Bayalpata Hospital’s doorstep.

List of items donated:

  1. Autoclave (2)
  2. Autoclave rods (4)
  3. Bed pans heavy (10)
  4. Binocular electrical microscope (1)
  5. Delivery bed (1)
  6. High vacuum suction unit (1)
  7. Hot air oven (1)
  8. Iv stand (4)
  9. Metal trolley (4)
  10. Micropipette variable diff size (4)
  11. Mobile metal curtain holders with curtains (3)
  12. Nebulizer machine (2)
  13. Oxygen concentrators (2)
  14. Refrigerator (1)
  15. Small oxygen tanks (2)
  16. Stool with wheels (2)
  17. Vacuum delivery set (2)

Refrigerator with laboratory tests

The impact of this generous donation is obvious throughout the hospital. The delivery table with 6 adjustable levers significantly improves the experience of the woman in labor and gets the auxillary nurse-midwives (ANMs) excited about conducting deliveries. The new microscope has permanently replaced the old one which frequently blew a fuse. The refrigerator is stocked with vaccines and laboratory tests that are used to measure blood levels of sodium, potassium and other electrolytes. The nebulizers and oxygen tanks have saved lives of children with severe pneumonia and patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The bed pans may not have saved any lives yet but let me assure you that our patients appreciate it a lot.

We are now collaborating with the staff physicians at CIWEC to improve our clinical protocols and we look forward to a lasting partnership to mobilize further resources to Achham.
